Redesigning the Social Security Administration

Social Security touches every U.S. citizen’s life—it’s not just about retirement or disability benefits. It’s the way you prove and protect your identity, through those nine unique numbers.
When we set out to redesign Social Security Online, our primary goal was to ensure that all of its diverse audiences could find the information they needed quickly. To accomplish that goal, we cleaned up the navigation, added an action carousel, and incorporated a section that speaks to specialized audiences such as businesses. We also wanted to create a more personalized experience, through a dashboard that allows the Social Security Administration to provide tailored information not just for you, but your family members. Additionally, we wanted to use the site as a tool for transparency that would address issues related to Social Security, openly acknowledging citizens’ anxieties around the longstanding institution.
