Description

CIVX provides aggregated public information from governmental entities, transparency organizations, and volunteers. We provide this data in open formats, and for free. Not only do we utilize many of the datasets and APIs recommended for the Apps for America Competition, but we have developed an API, command-line client, scrapers, and deployment architecture around them.

Outside of the recommended datasets, we have developed scrapers and models for a few of our own.

Featured Data Sets: -Git repository of USC, with colored diffs -Project Sunlight NY's first open API -NYS Board of Elections Campaign Filings

Moksha Platform: - While building CIVX, we also concurrently developed the Moksha Platform (http://moksha.fedorahosted.org).

This is a generic platform that is built on top of best-of-breed technology, and allows for the creation of live collaborative web applications that extract and extend data from arbitrary resources. Moksha also integrates with existing message brokers, allowing our architecture to work with other resources that can speak standard message formats, such as AMQP. - Our scrapers are driven by the Moksha Hub, which runs outside of the web application, and handles running our scrapers, updating our database, and sending messages to our message broker. The hub also provides a simple Consumer API that allows developers to monitor message queues, and take action upon new messages.
